I will be keeping the bulletin updated with my movements, opinions, and introduce any new work. Follow me on twitter, and check out my blog posts on August Animals.
The North West Festival
April 23, 2012
I have recently created the branding for The North West Festival – WA’s newest music festival. This morning an opening splash page went live with the festival headliner revealed. An ongoing stream of information and designed colateral across print and web will be making their way to the public in the coming months.
The brand embraces the palette of the Pilbara, with plenty of good vibes among the wonky-yet-neat selection of typefaces, and incorporation of illustration. Follow on Facebook or sign up to the E-news for more info.
Deco in the folio
April 21, 2012
I’ve just popped another font design in the folio. It a small collection of letters I spent some time on during 2011. It’s definitely an odd mix of widths, and it doesn’t reduce so well with the small squares that make up the pattern, so it was never going to cut it as the logo that I got started on.
I should clarify that the recurring word portal doesn’t actually have to do with the gallery I branded. The letters that make the word just seem to keep popping up among my clients recently. Capital R is only second to capital G in my eyes, so I’m quite happy to be designing its form.
Stencil Font
April 19, 2012
Every time we present clients with logo options there is a piece of work I am really happy with that doesn’t get its opportunity to see the light of day. Recently these letterforms pulled a second place (good as last) and now reside here in my folio. They were designed to be a bit tough and bold, with a few quirks about them – a serif here and a wonky edge there. These aren’t perfect letters, but they’re a bit charming and would have bought suitable character whilst serving their purpose. The chosen design is quite a bit different from these, and will be in the folio with its full application quite soon.
An overdue update
April 7, 2012
I realise I’ve let my folio gather quite a bit of dust recently. It’s not at all due to a lack of work being produced – quite the opposite in fact. We’ve found ourselves picking up a few larger jobs at the studio, which is leading to projects taking a little longer to complete. I’ve probably got three or four websites that are ready for the folio, and a couple of visual identities with quite extensive collateral being produced. Lots of work I’m proud of is nearly ready for photographing.
Recently on the Molte website I’ve incorporated more CSS3 animation using the fantastic transition property. Roll your cursor over the links in my Follow page for a peak.
All in all I’m very excited at some of the jobs on my WIP at the moment and look forward to sharing them.
Portal+Zekka
October 23, 2011
Late nights of brushing ink about and coarsening everything to grains went into the plough toward creating the branding and graphics for Portal+Zekka – Perth’s newest independent gallery.
The project’s guiding principle is to not be confined to showing work of a particular or defined discipline. Rather, Portal+Zekka seek to present and promote work that has engaged the owners from the fields of design, art and fashion. This is the latest venture from Zekka – Perth’s purveyors of immaculate clothing and design objects. After recently presenting Diane Pernet’s A Shaded View on Fashion Film Festival and exhibiting Graham Tabor and Miguel Villalobos‘ Hic Et Nunc in Zekka’s King Street space, Portal+Zekka opens its doors in Mosman Park to present Collecting Intimacy, an exhibition of sculpture and installation by Mary Hardy. The exhibition ran from 21 September through to 18 October.
A considered selection of toothy papers were matched with a monospaced typeface and a range of textured supporting graphics to define the direction of Portal+Zekka. I’m hoping to have photographs of the work in the folio in the coming weeks, along with a few other jobs that I’m very happy with.

The Secret Garden Café
March 28, 2011
I’ve just added the Secret Garden Café branding to the folio today. The identity was completed a little while back, but with arranging photography and keeping busy in the studio lately, it has been easy to put off updating the folio. Also, it has been lovely seeing the copper signage become a little duller and aging beautifully in the laneway on my occasional visits for coffee.
Owen and Jean – the new owners – sought out a distinct identity that touched on their vision for great food made in-house and delicious coffee, and tipped it’s cap to the heritage of the building. The business cards were letterpressed, each coffee cup is rubber stamped with the monogram, and the exterior signage is paint-filled, etched copper.
A full gallery can be seen here, and if you happen to be wandering in Perth, the Café can be found in the Murray Street Mews in the CBD.
Introducing Sunday Best
January 12, 2011
Sunday Best is a wooden coffee cart wheeling its way to all the lovely places you might find yourself wanting a little pick-me-up. Working closely with owners Jackson and Ledita, the focus on extracting premium single origin coffees, and a carefree, sunny day feel to the branding was clear. The challenges of creating an immediately adored and remarkable logo, and a method for contacting customers on a weekend morning about the temporary locations where the cart could be found was set, and – we like to think – met. Photos will be on the folio quite soon, but do find out more at sundaybest.com.au.
